Chapter 21

Bella woke up in the loft with Isaac sitting on the arm of the couch, near her head, with a glass of water in his hands. Seth was all wolfed out and laying in front of the sliding door; it looked a little ridiculous to see such a large wolf in Derek’s loft.

“Welcome back,” Isaac said as he looked her over. She looked remarkably in good shape as he handed her her glass of water. “Did you have fun?”

“Fuck yeah,” Bella replied as she let out a breath. “I was finally able to do to Carlisle what I wanted. The Volturi and the guard took care of the Cullens and then everyone else took care of them. I left when the bonfire was being made, I wasn’t needed there anymore. I’m sure Peter will send me pictures.”

He eyed her as she hesitated, looking around. “What’s the matter?”

“I, um… can you do me a favor? Can you go upstairs and pack up my clothes?” she asked as she headed for the kitchen.

“Pack?! What? What are you talking about?” Isaac questioned as he followed her. He barely gave Seth a glance as the boy shifted to his human form and was scrambling to put on some clothes. “Are you running away? I thought you just said that the vampires were taken care of.”

Bella opened the fridge to take out the package that Argent brought earlier. “It was something that Peter said, and then the Volturi king. But it made me realize that there is somewhere else that I need to be,” she explained as she opened the package, expecting to find bagged blood.

“Right. Some sort of supernatural pull, right? Well, okay. But I’ll pack up my stuff too, because where you’re going, I’m going,” Isaac said determined.

She looked up at him, stilling for a moment. “It could be dangerous. I can’t do that to you.”

“You’re not,” Isaac smiled widely. “I’m doing it to myself. Besides, my middle name is Dangerous, get with the program, Swan.”

“Fuck yeah. If you can break my bond to the pack, I want to come too!” Seth agreed. “Please Bella! I’m so sick of Jake and Sam! They are way too overbearing and no matter the danger, I can heal fast, and I am fast. I can get us out of anywhere quick. Please!”

“The three of us would be pretty badass,” Isaac grinned. “Who would want to mess with two kinds of werewolves and an Ikiryō?” He then bounded up the stairs and started to collect Bella’s things while she dealt with the package. Whatever it was, it wasn’t blood. If it had been, he would have been able to smell it, blood had a distinctive smell and that certainly hadn’t been the case. Ah, maybe, whatever it was, had a great time chilling in the fridge.

Bella rolled her eyes as she continued to open the paper, unwrapping a small wolf shaped stone carving. It appeared rather aged and much like an heirloom. “Why would he send me this?” She muttered to herself before she started to read the accompanied note, beautifully handwritten, as if he had truly taken his time to write it.

Seth eyed the note briefly over her shoulder. “Looks like you have some serious questions to ask the dude then. I take it we’re gonna go find him?”

“I think we are,” she answered as Isaac returned with her bags as she read. “New Orleans, here we come.”

Isabella,

I apologize for not sending you the promised blood, however I sent you something far more important to your person. I do hope that you aren’t too injured from your recent misadventures with the Cold Ones. If you do require some, please send word and I will have some sent immediately.

Allow me to explain why I sent you this trinket. It was something that had come into my possession over 500 years past, by another being such as yourself. It is a rather important and powerful totem, linked the spirit of what you are. As you can see, your imprint is on it and it’s what makes this trinket yours. What I had learned, and sadly experienced in the early days of when it had come into my possession, that the holder can control the spirit of the creature it is bound to. Unfortunately, despite the best witches at my disposal, I have yet to find one that has been able to sever the bond between the totem’s control and the spirit. Which is why I have sent it to you so that you may have total control over yourself and your choices.

While you never spoke of what you are, and I refuse to utter the word until you are ready to announce it to me yourself, I recognized the essence of your symbol upon your first arrival as I’d met your spirit many times over centuries. I deeply apologize for not telling you more of the knowledge that I possess and I ask that you refrain from asking questions that you may not wish to know the answers to, or be ready for. For they may be something that only time may tell.

Until we meet again,

Niklaus

Author Note continued: As if you can’t tell, this is setting up for a sequel. Yes, there is one coming. A timeline for the Mikaelson history referring to what Klaus mentioned in the letter has been plotted and a rough plot has been established and being worked out. It was just too good not to explore. Darn bunnies.

  1. Loved this entire story, darlin’, and the ending here leaves it completely open for a triad relationship between Derek, Bella, and Klaus ;). I only say this because it would be sad to see Bella leaving Derek completely even though she is for now.

    1. It would be interesting Sure, but Bella and Derek was never end game intentions. I do think you’ll like the story line intended for Bella and the backstory of her legacy 😉
